GET DEFINITIONS TO COMMON BUILDING TERMS

Below are definitions to some terms commonly used in our industry.

  • CAN MY RENOVATION HAPPEN AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR?
The answer is simple: YES! We offer our services all year round. Whether you need to change the siding or the doors and windows on your home, we can complete these services at any time during the year.
  • HOW DOES CLASSIC EXTERIORS COMPARE TO OTHER EXTERIOR RENOVATION COMPANIES?
Classic Exteriors has had our Certificate of Recognition (COR) since 2002, and we set the bar for safety in the industry in the Edmonton area. We have a superior service department; if you have any issues with your siding or if there are any minor repairs needed, we’re here to help, and most issues are solved within 10 days. We also work hard to offer on-trend products, and because of our long standing relationship with all of the exterior product suppliers in the Edmonton area, we are one of the first companies to get new products.
  • HOW MUCH WILL MY RENOVATION COST?
There are many variables that determine cost. For example, the type of exterior product(s) you choose (vinyl siding or cement fibre siding, etc.), the type of insulation you choose and also the size of your home all can affect the cost of your renovation. Because of this, we recommend that one of our estimators visit your home and give you a free estimate.
  • I’M HAVING ISSUES WITH MY EAVESTROUGHING DURING THE LATE FALL AND EARLY SPRING. DO I NEED TO HAVE IT REPLACED?
When the weather goes from above freezing during the day and below freezing at night, a cycle known as the “freeze-thaw cycle” starts. What happens is the water that is in the eavestroughing starts to freeze and block the trough, then it starts to accumulate and causes the trough to back up a bit and the water to overflow. There is no need to worry about this; once the temperature levels out, all the ice will move out and your eavestroughing will continue to work just fine.
  • I’VE HEARD THE HORROR STORIES ABOUT CONTRACTORS WALKING AWAY WITH PEOPLE’S MONEY. HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF?
The best way to protect yourself is to do your research. Really look into the companies you are considering. Classic Exteriors does not ask for any money up front. We have contracts that are signed by both parties to hold both sides accountable, and we only ask for payment once our side of the contract has been completed. As you do your research on various companies, the Better Business Bureau is an excellent resource.
  • WHAT STEPS SHOULD I TAKE BEFORE RENOVATING THE EXTERIOR OF MY HOME?
Do your research. Find out what products are out there and which ones will best suit your needs and price range. Also, be sure to find out what kind of credentials the companies you are considering have. One of the most important things you should ask for is if the company has up-to-date WCB coverage. Other items you can ask for include a business licence and if the company has any safety programs in place.
  • I’VE HEARD THAT VINYL SIDING IS A FIRE HAZARD. IS THAT TRUE?
There is no reason to believe that vinyl siding causes fires. Siding merely melts away to expose the wood and glue we build our homes with. Not only have vinyl siding manufacturers committed to reducing the fire risk of their products, exterior cladding is involved in only a fraction of all residential fires—most fires begin and stay indoors. Furthermore, the ASTM E162-06 test (a test that shows the surface flammability of different materials) shows that PVC has one of the lowest radiant panel indexes, which means it does not release much energy when it burns, nor will it readily spread flames. All this means that vinyl siding is a safe, practical and affordable choice for many homeowners.
  • HOW CAN I PROTECT MY HOME FROM WEATHER DAMAGE?
The best way to protect your home is to create a barrier with papering detail behind your exterior finishing system.
